Abstract:

The aim of this project is to develop and explore innovative energy storage systems that integrate power electronics with energy storage elements for high voltage and high power applications. The first part of the project focuses on the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC). Specifically, it investigates the impact of various adjustable parameters (degrees of freedom) in the MMC, including pole-to-pole DC voltage, second-order circulating current, and third-order zero-sequence voltage. These factors are analyzed in relation to key design parameters such as the number of submodules, semiconductor ratings, capacitor size, and losses. It is shown that by utilizing these degrees of freedom, the MMC design is optimized, resulting in more efficient use of components
