Omar Yaghi, Professor of chemistry at University of California, Berkeley, will introduce and discuss cutting-edge materials that enable extraction of drinking water from air powered by solar energy, a proven method even under dry conditions such as in a desert. Similar materials enable the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. A discussion about the possibilities these new materials for practical applications in different settings will follow.

Professor Yaghi has pioneered a new group of materials, including so-called metal-organic frameworks (MOF). The exceptionally large surface area of these materials gives them unique properties with promising applications. They not only permit the harvesting of water from air but also enable efficient catalysis and removal of CO2 from the atmosphere.

As the Founding Director of the Berkeley Global Science Institute, he also promotes the establishment of research centers in developing countries with opportunities for young scientists. Prof. Yaghi’s work is widely recognized and has earned him numerous prestigious awards and prizes.

The event will bring together actors that include researchers and local/regional actors within the water sector and serve to share knowledge, inspire collaboration and grow networks. It will be a hybrid meeting held in English, to allow for participants to join either in person or on Zoom.
There will be lunch sandwiches and mingle after the meeting.

Programme:

10.00-10.20 Welcome
10.20-10.40 Presentation of new materials and water-related possibilities by Prof. Omar Yaghi
10.40-11.20 Discussion of possible applications
11.20-11.30 Conclusions
11.30-12.30 Light lunch and mingle
