Abstract:
Data systems have long been designed for structured data on fixed, homogeneous hardware. Today, heterogeneity in data, hardware, and workloads is the norm. We increasingly analyze spatial and multimodal data, including satellite imagery and 3D geometries, while computation spans CPUs, GPUs, edge devices, and even orbiting satellites. At the same time, applications impose diverse requirements, from interactive and approximate analytics to computationally intensive semantic analysis using vision-language models. In this talk, I will present a research agenda for adaptive data systems that leverage this heterogeneity by tailoring query execution to data characteristics, hardware capabilities, and application needs.
