Take the opportunity to listen to researchers from Sweden and Denmark sharing their recent advances in biomass conversion into textiles and other biomaterials.

Welcome to this seminar where we will explore recent advances in the transition towards sustainable bio-based solutions. The transition to a fossil-free society will increase the need for biomass-based solutions and different technologies are being developed for converting biomass to materials and fuels.

An interesting biomass resource is grass fiber which is a co-product after extracting proteins from grass-leguminous biomass in green biorefineries.

In this seminar we will learn more about recent advances in biomass conversion into textiles and other biomaterials from researchers at Aarhus University and Chalmers University of Technology as well as business and societal interest for this new biomass resource.

The seminar is a collaboration between Green Valleys 2.0, Västra Götaland Region, Chalmers University of Technology, RISE, and Wargön Innovation.

Program:

9:00-9:30 Registration, Coffee and a fralla
9:30-9:35 Welcome, presentation by facilitator and Gröna möten
Oskar Reineling, Agroväst and facilitator Göran Berndes, Chalmers
9:40-9:50 Regional development strategy for Västra Götalandsregionen, focusing textile industry?
9:35-9:50 Introduction to the sustainable transition of the textile industry,
Birgitta Nilsson, regional developer, Västra Götalandsregionen
9:50-10:20 Grass fibers from green biorefineries– coupling food and biomaterials
Morten Ambye Jensen, associate professor, Biological and Chemical Engineering, Aarhus university
10:20-10:30 Short break
10:30-11:00 Possibilities and challenges to use fibers from green biorefineries for textiles and biomaterials
Diana Bernin, associate professor, Chemical Engineering, Chalmers
11:00-11:15 Usage of biorefinery biproduct to refined commercial materials
Julia Ronkainen - Project Manager at Wargön Innovation
In Green Valleys 2.0, Julia and her team att Wargön Innovation have had a close collaboration with industrial partners to investigate the opportunities and challenges to use the biorefinery biproduct so called press cake as a raw material to refined commercial materials.
The focus has been to understand the press cake's potential to be used for both conventional as well as newly invented materials towards textiles, paper products, interior design and packaging. Julia will present the results and findings from the industrial partner interviews and sample trials of the press cake.
11:15-11:30 Business case biobased material from ley
Carina Gunnarsson, RISE
11:30-11:35 Short break
11.35-11:50 Coupling food and biomaterials – interesting for Sweden?
Christel Cederberg and Göran Berndes, prof Space, Earth & Environment, Chalmers
12:00-12:30 Panel discussion
The speakers participate together with representatives from VGR and the textile industry

12:30-13:30 Summary and lunch
