Welcome to Nils Björling's lecture for Docent at the Division of Urban Design and Planning, Research Area Local and Regional Transformation.

After the lecture all participants are welcome to mingle and celebrate in pentry 387.

Abstract:

The lecture presents my research about local-regional urbanization processes and methods to strengthen the strategic capacity of urban design and planning practice.

The research can be described within three different areas: 1) The Rurban void describes and critically discusses spatial transformation in landscapes between stereotypical notions of both the city and the countryside; 2) A methodological framework to discuss and coordinate knowledge transfer and distribution of responsibilities between different planning levels, and; 3) A critical approach to the organization of social planning and misframings in relation to rescaling and institutional divisions.

Building on these themes the lecture outlines the need for future research to develop strategic urban design. This includes theory and methods for professional planning practice to work with the design of the built environment in relation to future known and still unknown societal change.
