Jens Ahrens

Welcome to attend the promotion lecture of Jens Ahrens as Professor at the Division of Applies Acoustics. Jens will present on the theme "Auralization" and speak about how auralization can be a tool for planning and design of the built environment, and current state of research in this area.

Celebration with fika afterwards. Open lecture, no registration needed.

Abstract

The concept of auralization may be defined as the process of placing a sound in a virtual environment and playing it back to a user that is also located inside that virtual environment. A classical application example is the auralization of a room acoustic simulation of a concert hall for evaluating the room acoustic design before the hall is being built. The potential application areas of auralizations are wide. Sound is an important part when creating virtual environments.

When it comes to research, faithful auralization of spaces and scenarios is of utter importance as a tool for evaluating the human response to any space, be it soundscapes in open-plan offices, classrooms, or urban spaces. This presentation gives an overview of how faithful auralization can be carried out currently, what challenges persist, and what possible routes may be for overcoming those challenges.
