Abstract: The use of nanomaterials in medicine has been growing at an unprecedented rate for a variety of therapeutic, diagnostic or combinatory applications. The clinical translation of advanced materials that are being discovered or synthetically engineered is considered by many the critical factor to determine the ´success´ or ´failure´ in nanomedicine. In this talk, our decade-long experience in the clinical translation of graphene two-dimensional nanosheets will be discussed. Recent progress in the development of medical-grade, clinically-used graphene oxide will be described, with emphasis on the first-in-human clinical investigation study undertaken recently using graphene oxide based suspensions. Emphasis will be placed on whether graphene can serve as a case study on what steps need to be undertaken for early-stage clinical translation of 2D advanced nanomaterials.
