Materials for Tomorrow is an annually recurring conference addressing future material challenges from different perspectives. This year, the focus is on the future of building materials – materials that can enable new structural solutions, support architectural design, and meet increasing demands for sustainability, performance, and durability in a changing world.
The conference will take place at Chalmers Conference Centre, RunAn, in Gothenburg on 26-27 November with several internationally recognized speakers.
This year’s conference brings together researchers, engineers, architects, industry representatives, authorities, and decision-makers to explore new material solutions, emerging technologies, and innovative approaches shaping tomorrow’s built environment. It is a forum where fundamental research meets real-world application.
Materials for Tomorrow 2026 offers an excellent opportunity for, among others, master’s students to gain deeper insight into how materials science and construction are connected – from the atomic scale to full-scale structures – and to understand the role materials play in societal development.
Conference themes and sessions
- Multiscale complexity: from angstrom to meter: How material properties emerge from structures spanning atomic to structural scales.
- Non-equilibrium materials: evolution, aging and degradation: Materials in transition – their evolution, aging, and degradation over time.
- Material design under real-world constraints: Designing materials for real conditions, including climate, production, economy, and regulations.
- Hybrids, interphases, emerging materials and properties: Hybrid materials, interfaces, and emerging properties with transformative potential for the building sector.

Photo contest
Materials Science Photo CompetitionIn concurrence with the conference Materials for Tomorrow the Area of Advance Materials Science organize a materials science photo competition. The idea is to bring forth the beauty that can be found in materials science.
