Availability of electrical energy is key

The vision of the Research Unit “Power Grids and Components” is that the future power system will be fully sustainable, based on renewable energy sources and will be characterized by higher efficiency, reliability and flexibility compared with today’s system.

Mission

Our mission is to

  • develop solutions enabling fully sustainable energy system.
  • generate key knowledge and competences needed for transformation of the existing energy system.
  • support industry and society with highly educated engineers and researchers.
  • interact with society and decision makers to influence system development and increase Chalmers’s visibility.

There are currently 37 researchers and engineers associated with the Research Unit “Power Grids and Components” including 33 Chalmers employees and 4 adjunct industrial researchers.

Expertise

Our main areas of expertise are:

  • Integrated energy systems (responsible Associate Prof. Tuan Le).
  • Operation and control of active grids (responsible Associate Prof. Peiyuan Chen).
  • System dynamics and power electronics integration (responsible Prof. Massimo Bongiorno).
  • High voltage components and technology (responsible Prof. Yuriy Serdyuk).

Teaching and collaboration

The staff of the Unit makes a substantial contribution to the teaching on all levels starting from basic courses and up to post-graduate education. The focus is on the International Master’s Programme on Sustainable Electric Power Engineering and Electromobility at Chalmers, for which Unit’s teachers deliver 12 courses focusing on various aspects of power systems, power electronics and high voltage engineering and technology.

The Unit has developed extended collaboration within Chalmers, with other universities in Sweden and abroad as well as with numerous industrial partners. Among the latter are Hitachi Energy, ABB, Eon, Vattenfall, Vestas and other companies.
