Title of the Thesis: Surface doping of MoS2 via wet etching
Abstract:
Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs), such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), have emerged as promising materials for next-generation electronic devices due to their unique electronic and optical properties. Doping of 2D TMDs presents an avenue for tailoring these properties, thereby enhancing their function- ality for various applications. In this study, we investigate the surface doping of natural MoS2 flakes using a wet etching solution method, aiming to understand the interplay between doping concentrations, material thickness, and the impact on electrical behavior.

Title of the thesis: Investigating the quantum dynamical nature of perovskites utlizing path integral molecular dynamics
Abstract:&nbsp;
Molecular dynamics (MD) is an established and effective atomic simulation technique for acquiring thermal and dynamical material properties. However, due to its reliance on Newton's second law of motion for updating atomic positions and velocities, MD offers a classical description of the atomic motion, thereby neglecting quantum effects. Path integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) addresses this limitation by employing an effective Hamiltonian derived from the quantum mechanical partition function, thus including quantum effects. To benchmark the method, PIMD simulations are used to investigate the thermal expansion and the temperature dependence of the phonon frequencies and phonon lifetimes of aluminum. For the dynamical properties thermostated ring polymer molecular dynamics (TRPMD) are utilized. The results are compared to classical MD simulations and quantum mechanical methods, such as self consistent phonons and perturbation theory, which show that PIMD and TRPMD can be used to obtain thermal and dynamical material properties including quantum effects.&nbsp;
After benchmarking the method we proceed utilize it to analyze the quantum mechanical behavior of perovskites. Perovskites are a group of materials known for their optoelctronic properties and structural phase transitions. In this thesis, PIMD is used to construct a temperature-phase diagram over the cubic to tetragonal structural phase transiton in barium zirconate. The results indicates that this structural phase transition is suppressed by quantum fluctuations at pressures between 0 GPa to 5 GPa. Furthermore, phonon frequencies and phonon lifetimes of barium zirconate &nbsp;are probed through TRPMD, revealing dynamical properties are strongly influenced by quantum effects at low temperatures, with some impact observed at temperatures up to 400 K.
Additionally, a phase diagram of the perovskite strontium zirconate is presented, including the cubic to tetragonal phase transtition as well as its paraelectric to ferroelectric phase transition. The constructed phase diagram reveals that while the cubic to tetragonal phase transition remains rather unaffected by quantum effects, the paraelectric to ferroelectric transition is shifted to lower pressures upon their inclusion.

Title of the thesis: Deep Learning in Early Osteoarthritis Detection via Biomarkers
&nbsp;Abstract:&nbsp;In the past, radiographic techniques have been used to diagnose osteoarthritis (OA), a common joint disease leading to lameness in racehorses. However, these methods typically only reveal the disease once irreversible damage has occurred. In this thesis, the focus shifts from imaging to biological biomarkers for early detection. Using synovial fluid biomarkers, this work explores the potential for deep machine learning models to accurately classify early stages of OA. This will enable timely interventions to prevent disease progression. In addition, a user-friendly web application was developed to assist practitioners in making real-time diagnoses. Based on preliminary results, deep learning approaches, particularly those involving neural networks, can effectively differentiate between stages of OA. This offers a promising tool for diagnosis and treatment. These findings suggest significant potential for improving diagnostic accuracy and, consequently, treatment outcomes in veterinary medicine.
