Light-weight high temperature materials beyond nickel-base alloys
Create a comprehensive stability landscape for the intermetallic A15-phase Cr 3 (Si, Pt) by 1 st principles modelling and controlled laboratory exposure experiments. This A15-phase constitutes an essential component in a novel class of high temperature nitridation resistant chromium-silicon base alloys. These offer a light weight
alternative to nickel-base alloys in the hot sections of jet turbines. Significant reduction of fuel consumption is envisaged analogous to the replacement of steel by intermetallic TiAl alloys in the General Electrics GEnx™ engine’s medium temperature turbine section. If granted, ground breaking insights in high temperature nitridation, gained by Chalmers, will be utilized for said novel alloy in collaboration with DECHEMA-Forschungsinstitut, Frankfurt, Germany and Imperial College, London, Great Britain (see attached letter of
intent). This project is planned for four month.
