In order to reduce fragmentation and to ensure a competitive European position in the global context, the big collaborative project called WINNER+ was launched involving leading manufacturers, operators, and academic partners in Europe, but also partners outside of Europe. Chalmers’ part of the WINNER+ project was sponsored by VINNOVA (Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems). The project built on the WINNER System Concept, which was developed in the EU FP6 WINNER and WINNER II projects. The WINNER+ project developed, optimized, and evaluated a competitive IMT-Advanced candidate proposal by integrating innovative and cost-effective additional concepts and functions and providing an evolution path towards further improved performance of IMT-Advanced. As such, WINNER+ also acted as an important European project to support future standardization within the next phase of 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE).
Innovations in the project were reached in the areas: radio-resource management including active management of interference, heterogeneous network deployment including relaying in combination with multiple antenna concepts, spectrum sharing and its flexible usage, multi- and broadcast capabilities utilizing macro-diversity, exploitation of peer-to-peer links between user terminals and incorporation of network coding. Chalmers focus in the project was on novel multiple antenna concepts and development of the overall WINNER+ System Concept.
