The role of electrofuels - a cost-effective solution for future transport

​Electrofuels is synthetic hydrocarbons produced from carbon dioxide and hydrogen with electricity as the main source. Energy system studies of electrofuels are missing and the purpose of the proposed research project is to deepen the knowledge of electrofuels by (i) mapping and analyze the technical and (ii) the economic potential and (iii) analyzing the potential role of electrofuels in the future energy system. 

The energy system model GET could be used for, by taking into account the competition for other the primary energy sources, analyzing the conditions under which electrofuels are cost-effective compared to other alternative fuels in order to reach climate targets. 

The results may contribute with important background facts for political and industrial investment decisions in electrofuel plants which we, together with industry, have recognized as missing today. 

The project is a collaboration between Chalmers and IVL, and is financed by f3 and the Swedish Energy Agency.
