There are potentially significant climate benefits with fuels derived from Swedish forest biomass. The assessment of these benefits strongly depends on methodological choices and assumptions regarding substituted products and alternative uses of the biomass. This project aims at studying how biofuels' potential climate benefits depend on these choices and assumptions. Different methods for climate impact assessment will be evaluated in life cycle assessments of biofuels, and comparisons will be done with alternative uses of Swedish forest biomass: building materials, textile fibres and chemicals. The project is needed both to improve methods for the assessment of climate impact and to strengthen decision making influencing Swedish biofuel production.
