The main objective of this project is to enhance the knowledge on technical, economic and environmental consequences of integrating a lignocellulosic ethanol production process into a pulp mill aiming at generating electricity and producing lignin in addition to pulp and ethanol. A new process route for ethanol production is to be evaluated, i.e. we will evaluate an alternative fermentation process, “high solid simultaneous saccharification and fermentation”, or so-called “high gravity”, and further compare our results with the conventional fermentation process. We will identify the potential for efficient heat integration within the mill, within the ethanol plant, as well as between the mill and the ethanol plant. Different cases of the studied concept will then be evaluated with respect to economic performance and greenhouse gas emissions.
