Safe and Liveable Urban Streets: Integrating driver and the built environment perspectives for a sustainable transport system
Transportation systems in urban settings are facing transitions due to technology and societal developments. Different vehicle automation technologies provide new challenges for the built environment as automated and non-automated vehicles use the same infrastructure. Similarly, new personal mobility systems places vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians in the same spaces as electric scooters, e-bikes, and similar vehicles. Efficient transportation systems need an understanding of both the built environment and vehicle systems. This project combines expertise from both domains to address higher level transportation issues.
The project will work with analyses and workshop activities to allow both vehicle safety and built environment researchers to obtain insight into each other domains. The activities will focus on future transportation scenarios, particularly the interaction of motorized and non-motorized road users. Emphasis will be placed on the modelling approaches used in the different domains to address similar issues, for example pedestrian and traffic movements.
The project will lead to interdisciplinary project ideas where collaboration between the two domains can lead to new research paradigms and solutions for sustainable transport.
