The load-carrying capacity of bridge decks are often critical for existing bridges, but is often largely underestimated in current practice. In a previous research project for the Swedish Transport Administration a strategy for structural assessment was developed based on successively improved analysis methods. With this multi-level structural assessment strategy it was possible to show higher load-carrying capacity and better understanding of the structural response of reinforced concrete bridge deck slabs with enhanced analysis methods using non-linear finite element methods. Still, the methods developed are feasible for use in engineering practice, even if they are more advanced than methods commonly used today.
Through this project, recommendations for practicing structural engineers will be provided on how to perform improved structural assessment of reinforced concrete bridge deck slabs through enhanced structural analysis with the finite element method. The recommendations will be in accordance with standards and established handbooks and will enable higher load-carrying capacities and prolonged service lives for many bridges. Consequently, they will contribute to more resource efficient and sustainable bridge management, with great economical savings and a lower carbon footprint. The recommendations will be presented in a written guide and through short courses.
