When carrying out an optimization of inspection, maintenance and operational parameters to obtain a balance that
reduces the life cycle costs of railway infrastructure and railway operations, it is vital to understand and be able to
formulate and quantify the deterioration of key components.
This project focuses on the evolving deterioration of rails and wheels during operational loading. This process
can be seen as a feedback loop where the progressive deterioration of track and vehicles influences the loading on
rails and wheels, which in turn will influence the deterioration rate of wheels and rails. This project set out by identifying current degradation models and how these relate the deterioration of rails and wheels to (altered) operational conditions.
