Physico-chemical properties of oxidised xylan and its interaction with cellulose for film applications

Purpose and goal: Using polymers derived from biomass for conventional products such as plastic is of high interest. However, the development is not evident as many polysaccharides are stiff and cannot be processed in common and current (thermal) processes used for fossil derived polymers. The goal of this project is to employ neutron scattering for determination of the molecular properties of unmodified and modified polysaccharide grades. Expected results and effects: The project will contribute in increasing the fundamental understanding of polysaccharides in solution. The project is also expected to generate important results for the associated PhD student, increase her understanding and abilities to use neutron scattering (through hands on use as well as course) as well as contributing to increased use of large-scale facilities from the industry. Approach and implementation: The project is an opportunity to bring together an expert in neutron scattering and well renowned scientist in cellulose area as well as interact and disseminate our results but also experiences of using neutron with the industrial partner.
