Residual stresses are undesirable because they often require subsequent post treatment operations. These post treatments often accounts for a significant amount of a company’s energy use. Heat treatment is often required as for homogenisation of properties, including residual stresses, because they may otherwise interfere during machining. Residual stresses are also important to consider since they prevent the possibility to fully optimise the weight of cast components. Therefore, to minimise the energy output of a component in, a life cycle perspective, it is important to consider both the manufacturing and the operation phase. This project addresses this by; (i) utilise and control residual stresses and combining these with weight optimisation, and (ii) develop processes to eliminate unnecessary energy-consuming post treatment steps. A successful project will further strengthen Sweden as a leader in energy efficient design.
