Multifunctional graphene-enhanced thermoplastics for aerospace applications
Purpose and goal: In this project we will develop a new graphene-enhanced thermoplastic material with respect to multifunctionality. The aim is to significantly improve strength and to induce electrical conductivity via the graphene enhancement of the polymer. From the combination of experiments, modelling and simulations, we search to understand the graphene-polymer interaction to obtain the optimal graphene dispersion technology and thereby a new material. Expected results and effects: The project provides us with a platform essential for development of graphene based high-tech, lightweight and sustainable thermoplastic materials to be used in demanding aeronautical products and applications. Main focus is on material development for 3D-printing applications. Materials with such a multifunctional capability enables disruptive techniques for integration of thermal management, Electronics, antennas and sensors which are functionalities of highest concern to strengthen Swedish industries competitiveness on the global market. Approach and implementation: The project will be performed in a close collaboration between project partners. Saab is the end user of the project results, 2DFab produce the graphene material, Linköping University is responsible for study of interactions between the graphene material and the polymer, UFABC will study and optimize the dispersion and Chalmers will perform simulations and modelling of the dispersion. All will be performed in an iterative process which will develope the Project and bring new insights and results.
