Multi-scale bioethanol production systems analysis – from bio-reactor to LCA
The overarching goal of this project is to address how data and information flows from small to large scales, and vice-versa, can be effectively used to improve the design and development of industrial biotechnological processes. A new modelling framework for multi-scale systems analysis of such processes will be demonstrated. The framework consists of established methods and modelling approaches such as bio-reactor kinetics modelling, process modelling and simulation, and techno-economic and life cycle assessments (TEA and LCA, respectively). Data interfaces between the different components of this framework are designed. The framework will be used to perform an analysis of how uncertainties in experimental lab data and process simulation results will affect the outcomes of LCA and TEA of 2nd generation bio-ethanol production, and how
these outcomes will consequently affect the further development of this process.
