Loss and EMI reduction in electrified vehicle through the usage of a multilevel converter

In this project, multi level converters in the task as electrified vehicle propulsion converters, are to be investigated. The advantage of using a multilevel converter is that the voltage jumps and also the speed at which the voltage transitions take place as well as the frequency(occurrence) of the transitions is lowered. This gives EMI-benefits as well as energy efficiency benefits. The drawback is an increased control complexity, and thus it is very important to quantify the benefits in terms of EMI and efficiency. The converters to be investigated are the NPC converter as well as the MMC converter. Finally a hybrid converter with a two-level part as well as an MMC-part is to be investigated, in order to handle situations with very low vehicle speeds and high force, i.e curb climbing. Also, the effect of using various sizes of cells as well as using supercapacitors and electrolytic capacitors in parallel in order to reduce EMI and increase efficiency, are to be investigated.
