The need for light weight products is increasing in all engineering areas including car, aerospace, marine and infrastructure branches. Light weight plays an important role for increasing efficiency and reducing environmental impact which itself is a perquisite for further development in a high demanding global market.
One of the challenges in infrastructure area, more specifically bridge engineering, is the on-site work and resulted disturbance form the construction work to inhabitants in urban areas.
Light weight FRP materials offer many advantages such as high specific strength and stiffness, off-site manufacturing and on-site assembly, easy handling and good durability. This project aims to investigate the potential of FRP composites for construction of road bridges in Sweden. Opportunities and challenges from client and technical points of view with regard to material, design and manufacturing will be investigated. The project will be carried out in collaboration with Swedish Transport Administration.
The project is carried out at the Division of Structural Engineering in the research group Steel and Timber Strucutures.
