Lifetime and status assessment of district heating networks

Heat loss in the Swedish district heating networks is estimated to be about 10% (5 TWH / year) of the produced energy. The amount of heat loss is directly proportional to the insulation capacity of the pipes. During 2010-2013 Fjärrsyn funded two projects related to improving the efficiency of the pipe insulation. The results of the projects showed that hybrid insulated pipes with high performance insulation material can reduce the heat losses by 30%. Many energy companies are facing renewal of district heating network. However, there are no methods to determine the performance of existing pre-insulated district heating pipe during its operation. The lifetime and the status of the district heating network will be investigated. Outcome of the project will be effectively insulated pipes, a non-destructive method for determining the pre-insulated district heating pipe’s status through its lifetime and odification of the model related to lifetime estimation of pipes.
