Ideal Carbon Utilisation (ICU) in wastewater treatment - filtration and acidogenic fermentation

The aim of the project is to provide knowledge that enable improved use of organic carbon in municipal wastewater treatment to decrease climate impact, electricity usage and footprint.

We investigate new pre-treatment with filtration and acidogenic fermentation of primary sludge, where the organic matter in the wastewater is used to produce volatile fatty acids (VFA), to be used at carbon source for the biological processes at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Filtration of influent wastewater is used to provide the fermentation reactors with a stream of highly concentrated organic matter in a compact and efficient way.

The studies are conducted at a pilot plant at Källby WWTP in Lund.
