High Speed and High Temperature 1 µm VCSELs

The project aims at developing high speed, high efficiency and high temperature GaAs-based vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) at wavelengths close to 1 µm. This allows for the use of deeper quantum wells and more extensive use of binary compounds which is expected to improve the modulation speed and the high temperature performance. In addition, the multimode fiber used for short reach interconnects has lower chromatic dispersion and lower loss at these wavelengths compared to 850 nm, which is the standard wavelength. This will enable longer distance transmission over a multimode fiber designed for maximum modal bandwidth at the longer wavelength.
