Graphene Hall Sensors

The purpose of this project is to explore the performance and the limits of Hall sensors based on epitaxial graphene on SiC targeting applications in automotive industry. The specific goals are related to producing sensors that offer the high sensitivity needed for operation in real application, to mention:

a) Demonstrate Hall sensors with voltage sensitivity of at least SV=100 mV/VT, at room temperature (T=25°C).
b) Demonstrate Hall sensor performance in harsh operating conditions such as temperatures up to T=175°C.


By using epitaxial graphene as the core of novel Hall effect sensors, we aim at outperforming state of the art commercial Hall sensors widely used in automotive industry applications. Should the project be successful, the next step would be to demonstrate large scale production and reproducible performance at a competitive price level. The potential impact of such technology is to become the new standard for Hall sensors.
The actors in the project form a supply chain, where Graphensic provides material & coordination; Chalmers, device design & processing; and TDK-Micronas electromagnetical characterization, & rating of the sensor performance. We will reach our objectives through a tight collaboration between the actors where we aim to fit in two iteration loops (material + processing + characterization) to optimize devices.
