Further studies of charcoal and an automatic version of the Maypack sampler for radioactive iodine

The purpose of this project is to make progress towards an autmated device, which will allow the measurement of radioactivity, the device will identify the form of the radioactivity. The device will be able to function under the conditions of a station blackout accident.

It is also intending in the project of move forwards from teh recent project on different forms of organic iodine on charcoal, in the new project tests will be made under conditions which are much closer to those which would be found in sampling equipment, personal protective clothing (respirators) and collective systems (the standby gas treatment system).

The final goal is to create an automated Maypack like filter sampler combined with gamma counting system, which can operate without the assistance of a human. The device will be able to measure the different forms of iodine and to be able to separate xenon from the air.
