Energy efficient transmissions

This application is part of a transmission cluster formed by Volvo AB, Scania, Chalmers and KTH. The application is for two PhD students (one at KTH and one at Chalmers). Gear transmissions efficiency can be divided in to velocity depended and load depended losses. The lubricant viscosity and the rotational speed influence the velocity depended losses. Friction in gear contacts and in bearings is the main cause of the load dependent losses. The project will focus on a holistic perspective to reduce the energy losses at system level by focusing on minimizing the velocity dependent losses in parallel with optimization of fluid flow and oil transport in the transmission.
