The shipping sector uses almost exclusively fossil fuels to meet its energy needs. However, access to fossil-free fuels for shipping is limited and other transportation sectors are expected to use available renewable fuels the coming years. An increased energy efficiency is therefore of utmost importance to reduce the sectors greenhouse gas emissions. The first two research projects financed by the Swedish Energy Agency have come to a number of conclusions, some of which are listed below: - there is great potential in disseminating existing technologies and methods - how shipping companies organize their work with energy efficiency is of crucial importance - the mandatory regulatory regimes (i.e. the SEEMP) are weak and not sufficient for ambitious companies This project aims at generalizing the results of the case studies performed in the previous project through independent studies as well as through collaboration with other researchers, nationally and internationally.
