Fluidized-bed (FB) conversion of solid fuels is characterized by high fuel flexibility and the potential to efficiently handle high volatile and low-grade fuels, such as biomass and waste fuels. However, development of FB units for biomass and difficult fuels and fuel mixtures has so far relied on industrial experience, which sets a challenge on the reliable design and scale-up of FB units for biomass conversion. This project aims to develop and apply methods for experimental characterization of the solids and gas mixing at conditions relevant for industrial FBC units. Besides the intrinsic value of the knowledge gained on the phenomena investigated, the experimental results are to be used in the formulation and implementation of a predictive model which can serve as a tool to ensure reliable design, scale and operation up of the FBC process having biomass as fuel.
