Channel Models and Communications Methods for Location-Aware Communication

As position data becomes a fundamental basis of many commercial, public, and military applications, next generation wireless devices, e.g., 4G handsets, are expected to have the capability to self-localize and provide location information with a high level of accuracy anywhere and anytime. In order to satisfy this requirement, cooperative positioning and navigation systems are currently being investigated as effective means for determining positions in wireless networks, especially in situations where satellite based positioning, such as GPS, are not available or provide poor performance, e.g., indoors or in urban canyons. In parallel, cooperative communication has been heralded as the next leap forward to improve scalability and communication throughput of wireless networks. Little research has been performed about the interaction of these two research topics, in particular how and to what extent location information with uncertainty may aid communication capabilities in cooperative networks. This is exactly the goal of this research project
