Fermentation-based production of chemicals and advanced biofuels from lignocellulosic raw materials is a key enabling technology for the circular bio-economy. In this project, we will develop a bioethanol process as a model for advanced lignocellulosic fermentation processes. We will use residues from forestry and agriculture as raw materials. The materials are pretreated by acid-catalysed steam explosion at high consistency, followed by separation of a hydrolysate and a solid fraction. Yeast will be propagated on the hydrolysate and is thereby adapted to the raw material. The solids and the yeast are gradually fed to a Multi-Feed High Gravity Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation process, where hydrolysis and fermentation occur simultaneously. Kinetic models will be used to optimise the time and amounts to be fed. The goal is to develop technology that can be used for environmentally and economically feasible production of bioethanol and other biochemicals.
