Within this project, we will develop models and knowledge to enable stakeholders to assess the load-carrying capacity of existing structures with corroded smooth reinforcement bars. Models for that are currently lacking; for that reason, buildings and civil engineering structures are most likely being strengthened and even replaced unnecessarily. Naturally corroded specimens will be used, which makes the suggested project unique, and at the same time highly practically relevant. The specimens are edge beams from a bridge in Gullspång that was tore down in February 2016; their crack pattern and crack widths are already carefully documented. In this project, they will be structurally tested to investigate the anchorage capacity of the corroded smooth bars, which thereafter will be brought out, cut, cleaned, weighed, 3D-scanned and tested in tension. From these tests, information about anchorage capacity, corrosion level, tensile capacity and ductility of the bars will be known, and we will link these properties to the documented visible damage. Thus, ultimately, the project will give guidance on how the load-carrying capacity can be obtained from visual inspection. Thereby, the project will contribute to significant economic and environmental savings for society, preserving also large cultural values, as we with improved knowledge can repair and replace existing structures only when necessary, still guaranteeing the required structural safety.
