Aerodynamics in Robust and Optimized Structures

Objective and Goal: The project will increase our knowledge about aerodynamic performance and stability of turbine outlet structures. Engine representative geometries will be tested in a new test-rig currently being buildt at Chalmers University of Technology. The new test-rig will be ready in 2015. Tests will be done of advanced aero-designs. At first the focus will be to validate analysis method and gain new knowledge of the flow-physics in these compontents. Thereafter new more optimized aero-designs will be studied. Result and Expected Effects: The results are expected to make it possible to further optimize turbine outlet structures, produced using advanced manufacturing technologies with new materials able to handle even higher temperatures, something which in turn will improve the engine performance. In addition, the knowledge gained will be important to make it possible to design new outlet guide vanes able to handle even higher inlet swirl angles. This is a key to in the future improve the performance of the low-pressure-turbine module in ungeared two-axis aero engines.
