A comparative analysis of water use in lignocellulosic ethanol processes
In production of second generation ethanol the process streams in both pretreatment and biotechnology are diluted. There is a lot of research going on today to solve the problem with diluted streams, but other issues such as increased inhibition and higher viscosities are problems that need to be resolved still. In the study described in this application, a comparative analysis of the water balance for ethanol processes, either with high recirculation of water, or with high dry solids content (and thus low dilution) will be performed. The results from the project are expected to indicate opportunities to minimize water consumption, identify bottlenecks in the system, and build knowledge on how the energy-and economic performance of the process is related to the water balance.
