Emma is a PhD student in the Injury Prevention group within the Vehicle Safety division. Her research aim is to enhance an existing finite element human body model (HBM), so that it can predict occupant kinematics in complex omnidirectional pre-crash situations, using active muscle control. The HBM is to be used in simulations of pre-crash and emergency events including vertical loading, such as roll-over and initiation of road departure. To accurately predict the human response in these situations the HBM needs to be enhanced in its biofidelity in the shoulder area, tuned and validated for lateral loading conditions, and a better understanding of human muscle recruitment when subjected to vertical loading needs to be gained.
