Gender equality, equal treatment and diversity

As a student at Chalmers, you should be given equal opportunities to learn and always feel included in your education. You should also acquire the knowledge needed to contribute to gender equality, equal treatment and diversity in society in your profession.

Chalmers strategy and objective

To achieve these goals, we have developed a strategy for gender equality, equal treatment and diversity. From the 2022-23 academic year onwards, programmes at undergraduate level have special learning objectives and courses with integrated elements covering gender equality, equal treatment and diversity. Our Master’s programmes will have these elements in courses from the 2023-24 academic year.

This means that students will take at least one compulsory course that includes the perspectives of gender equality, equal treatment and diversity. The objective is for all students who graduate from Chalmers to have the awareness and skills to be able to contribute to gender equality, equal treatment and diversity in society. They will be able to do this both as leaders and colleagues in the workplace and in their roles as developers, suppliers and managers of products, systems and services. In addition to the compulsory elements, you will also be able to take optional courses to deepen your knowledge in the field.

Inclusive teaching

Chalmers’ strategy also aims to ensure that teaching is designed and delivered so that all students have the same prospects of learning and being assessed irrespective of gender, transgender identity and expression, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion or other belief, disability, age or social background. Teaching must be inclusive for all students, as examples it must not reinforce stereotypes or be discriminatory. This could also mean providing the same opportunities for active participation in learning activities, which is particularly relevant for courses on which students are expected to interact with each other, such as in seminars, group work and projects.

After each course is completed, a course survey is sent out to give the students who have taken the course the opportunity to evaluate it and provide feedback to Chalmers. To capture students’ experience of gender equality, equal treatment and diversity on a course, the survey contains compulsory questions about equal learning opportunities and how welcome and appreciated they felt on their course.

We actively promote inclusion in the study environment and work to ensure that our campuses are free of discrimination and harassment. It is important to us that everyone on our campuses feels safe and included, and it is a priority for us to pass this on to all our students.

Safe at Chalmers

Safe at Chalmers is where you as an student can learn more about what harassment and sexual harassment are, and report if you have experienced unwanted behavior or witnessed it. Whether you are a student or a visitor, you should feel safe on our campuses. We are each other’s study and work environment and together we are responsible for creating a higher education institution that we both are proud of and feel safe in. Our campuses should be free from harassment and discrimination. All of us need to contribute to make that happen.
