Abstract:
The main topic of this master’s thesis is studying the synergy between the implementation of renewable energy sources and hydrogen production. By tackling both the technical and economic point of view of an energy case study, the possible implementations of power-to-x pathways were thoroughly analysed. 
 
The aim of the work was to ensure the energy self-sufficiency of the Helsingin Seudun Ympäristöpalvelut (HSY) Ämmässuo eco-industrial centre. Once this was accomplished, the analysis shifted on the optimal utilisation of the potential surplus energy. 
 
Four energy scenarios of increasing complexity were analysed.  The results showed that, while it is possible to simultaneously achieve energy self-sufficiency by implementing additional renewable sources and to invest in an electrolyser for hydrogen production, the generation of compounds such as methanol or methane is not feasible in the near future.
