Title of the lecture:
"Scientific Computing - The Third Way"
Abstract: In Political Science, the the third way represents a combination of established right-wing and left-wing politics with the aim to arrive at new types of societies. In a similar way, Scientific Computing combines two since very long established scientific methods; theory (mathematics) and experiments. Mathematical modelling is combined with computer experiments (simulation and/or analysis of data) to solve new research problems. Here, algorithms, software and computer hardware provide the bridge between the models and experiments. Some contributions in all of these areas will be presented in the form of examples from different research projects. Also, conclusions on the impact of Scientific Computing on the development of computer systems and e-infrastructure will be drawn, and a few predictions on the future of the field will be presented.
