A biodegradable straw has been produced on a pilot-scale in co-operation between the Division of Engineering Materials at Chalmers, Tetra Pak and Polykemi, making use of a biodegradable poly-caprolactone reinforced with cellulose-nanocrystals. An important part of this material composition was to make the straws biodegradable even in salt-water.
This bio-composite straw demonstrates the applicability of research results obtained in the project Cellulose Nanocomposites,
funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) and carried out jointly by Chalmers and KTH with the support of Tetra Pak, Polykemi and Borregaard.
