Title: Generalized S-parameter transformations
Abstract: Scattering parameters are the most widely used parameter set in high-frequency applications, but are often not well understood. This talk will give a basic introduction of S-parameters which differs from that found in most textbooks, in this case rigorously based on transmission lines. Various other types of S-parameters in standard use will be discussed, including power-wave S-parameters, and generalized S-parameters. Multiport S-parameters will be introduced, also for networks with non-physical ports.
Following the basic theory, a technique for the transformation of networks for different port descriptions will be introduced - the so-called Generalized S-parameter Transformation. Applications of this technique to circuit design, antenna design, and cross-talk on transmission lines will be shown. Finally, the use of macro-modelling techniques as applied to S-parameters will be discussed.
