Computing faster: Is it all about moving data faster?

Abstract
For decades now, efforts on computer systems design is focused more on improving data movement (interconnects, memory hierarchy) rather than on improving the actual processing (cores). In this talk, I will analyze existing evidence and trends regarding the impact of moving data on systems performance and energy efficiency. Then, I will present some of our research results on related topics and finally attempt to predict future directions.
Ioannis Sourdis will be promoted to professor (biträdande professor). He belongs to the Computer Engineering division of Computer Science and Engineering.
