Chalmers Sports & Technology was initiated in 2012 as a response to the identified need for more in-depth engineering research applied in sports. Since then, we have conducted sports-related education, research and innovation together with more than 150 external stakeholders, including many companies, sports associations and clubs, and other public organizations. Several projects combining cutting edge research with challenges presented by the sport sector (athletes, coaches, sports associations and companies) have resulted in internationally recognized innovations, such as: i) development of a smart textile sensor for monitoring the full ECG of horses, ii) the worlds-first video documented foiling optimist dinghy; iii) development of a prototype real-time motion sensor system for swimming, enabling wireless communication over a water/air interface and iv) development of a motion and force measuring device integrated in a ski pole handle. In total, more than 200 journal papers, conference contributions and reports have been published to disseminate the results of these activities, through which an internationally strong network of companies and research organizations has been achieved. Beside the extensive contact network with established stakeholders, new companies have also been started. As many as nine start ups with relations to Chalmers Sports & Technology have been founded in the past five years.
Our research is focused in four main competence areas - Materials, Digitalization, Biomechanics and Fluid Dynamics - and applied to sports such as cycling, equestrian sports, floorball, sailing, skiing and swimming.
