Graphene based technologies for advanced water treatment

I will report our recent results on  the development of advanced graphene materials and technologies for drinking water monitoring and treatment.
Finding new solutions for the detection and removal of emerging contaminants (i.e. pharmaceuticals, personal care products and PFAS, among the others) from water is mandatory to satisfy the Water Safety Plans recently introduced by the European Drinking Water Directive 2020/2184 and it is requested to water operators to prevent and minimize risks related to water pollution. 
We have realized graphene composites and membranes with wide versatility toward several classes of contaminants, outperforming in most cases, granular activated carbon (GAC) the industrial sorbent benchmark.[1,2]
In addition, we have developed chemical functionalization strategies  [3] that promote adsorption with high selectivity and that  enable simultaneous transduction in electrochemical sensors.
Finally, I will discuss on opportunity and challenges for graphene in water purification scenario to respond to the sustainable development goal n6 of the UN ‘ensuring clean water and sanitation to all’.
