This course is one of the compulsory courses at the Graduate school Technology Management and Economics; it has been designed as the first course for the graduate students as it is a quite general introductory course followed by the Qualitative and Quantitative methods courses. We strongly recommend taking RTME before other mandatory courses
Prerequisites and registration:
The course is limited to 12 participants. All applicants should be enrolled as graduate students at Chalmers. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org in order to apply for the course. If more than 12 persons apply for the course, participants will be selected on the basis of the date of application with priority given to graduate students from the Department of Technology Management and Economics.
The course syllabus with detailed schedule shall be distributed in July.
The course shall run on the following dates (mostly Mondays afternoon): 26/8; 2/9; 9/9; 16/9; 23/9; 30/9; 7/10; 16/10; 18/10 (Hanna's PhD thesis defense); 21/10; 28/10; 4/11.
Objectives and learning outcomes:
As an introductory course for RTME aims at providing a basic understanding of research in terms of basic notions of research and the research process. The course also aims at preparing the doctoral student for life in academia, discussing some important aspects of being a researcher such as preparing a research project, participating in the academic debate and interacting with supervisors and other researchers. Finally the course aims at supporting the graduate student in the initial steps towards developing his/her individual research proposal.
To pass this course the participants are required to actively participate in both lectures and the seminars; and hand in all required seminar reports. Notify Violeta in advance if you are unable to attend a session (assignments will be required to compensate for absence).
The course covers following main areas:
- Introduction to Theory and Methodology of Science with focus on which theory to use, concepts, research strategies, perspectives of philosophy of science
- Work on defining a theoretical field with a focus on formulating research problems and how to relate to literature and use references
- How to design a research study on the basis of the formulated problem. It also addresses quality criteria in research.
- The research process and the development of a research proposal, including a discussion on how to work with supervisors and other senior researchers.
- The art of making a claim and writing academic texts.
- This session introduces the academic processes, the demands from the academic community, ethics and the dissertation process.
