Presentation:

Maria Elmquist (formerly Backman) is an assistant professor at the Department of Technology Management and Economics at Chalmers University of Technology. She is also an affiliated researcher at the Centre de Gestion Scientifique at Ecole des Mines in Paris where she was a visiting researcher in 2004 and 2007-2008. She presented her PhD thesis on Prerequisites for innovative concepts in established R&D structures in 2007.

Her current academic research is mainly focused on the management of innovation, organization of R&D and design activities, eco-innovation and strategic change. Ongoing research includes projects on the development of innovative capabilities and the management of open innovation. She uses mainly qualitative methods (interviews, observation, interaction research …) and is used to working in close collaboration with industrial partners (according to a collaborative research approach) where the objective is to create knowledge that is relevant to both academics and practitioners and also actionable for the partners.

Her research has appeared in journals such as Research Policy, R&D Management and Creativity and Innovation Management and she has also written a book on concept car development. She is also a program director at Chalmers Advanced Management Programs and the Study Director of the PhD school at the department.
