The overall aim of the thesis is that of increasing the understanding of people’s energy use and their use of energy-reliant artefacts in the everyday in order to propose ways of supporting energy conservation through design. Two main themes are explored within its scope: how people’s doings in everyday life influence energy use and how energy-reliant artefacts designed to support energy conservation influence energy use. </div> <div>Material from four empirical studies has been used to address the themes and discuss implications for design practice. Study A investigated how people’s possession and use of appliances influenced energy use and Study B explored people’s energy use and approach to energy conservation from the perspective of everyday activities. Studies C and D investigated how artefacts designed to support energy conservation may influence energy use through evaluations of an energy feedback system and kitchen appliances designed to mediate less energy-intensive use, respectively. </div> <div>A cross-study analysis shows that people’s energy use is embedded in the web of activities that make up everyday life and suggests that the design of energy-reliant artefacts mediates the actions and outcomes of those activities. Depending on their overall design, design characteristics, and their fit with the activity that is enabled, energy-reliant artefacts may either facilitate energy conservation or make less energy-intensive use challenging or undesirable. For instance, if artefacts are not easily understandable and easy to use, and if they do not provide suitable functions that enable people to use them effectively for a particular purpose, they risk being rejected or used in an energy-intensive way. The findings thus suggest that artefacts designed with one or more functions aimed to motivate or encourage people to reduce their energy use, commonly referred to as design interventions in literature, risk impeding energy conservation if they do not support energy conservation as a whole. To increase the potential for artefacts to support energy conservation, it is crucial to design suitable and relevant artefacts that provide for less energy-reliant everyday activities and that make it possible and desirable for people to meet their needs and attain their goals in less energy-intensive ways. If less energy-intensive use is only encouraged, but is not enabled and mediated, it will be difficult for people that do not have the preconditions to use less energy to actually reduce their energy use. </div> <div>This thesis therefore argues for moving beyond design interventions and instead designing for less energy-reliant activities by holistically considering the preconditions and design characteristics that functions on all layers of design may give rise to. Such an approach has the potential to reduce mismatches between the design of an artefact and the activity enabled, which in turn may increase the potential for artefacts to be used in less-energy-intensive ways and be adopted long term. Increasing design and assembly complexity are challenging the industry today and in particular the automotive industry because the constantly increasing number of car variants and build options can result in immense difficulties and lead to costly assembly errors and quality losses. For each task in paced assembly lines the operators have many choices to make in order to pick the right component, the right tools and make things in the right order to build flawless quality, which could easily be jeopardized in suboptimal working conditions. To keep highly qualified and healthy operators companies should offer good working conditions and a good working environment. Yet, work-related disorders are still very common and often result in sick-leave and staff turn-over despite the fact that many efforts and actions may have been made to solve the problems. For this purpose, novel wideband and energy efficient power amplifiers should be designed. This thesis is concerned with this problem. Doherty Power Amplifiers (DPAs) are popular architectures for obtaining high average efficiency for a large range of output power levels. In this work, a DPA is designed using WIN Semiconductor’s 50μm GaAs pHEMT process and a monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) layout ready for tape-out fabrication in Ka-band is created.<br /><br />In this thesis, a power amplifier consisting of two stages; a DPA and a pre-amlifier for improved gain, is designed and simulated. Main and auxiliary cells of the DPA are fed through an unequal Wilkinson power splitter. The simulations show that peak power added efficiency (PAE) of 40% and gain &gt; 15 dB is achieved for 26.5-31.5 GHz band. The PAE levels of 28% at 6 dB back-off and 18% at 9 dB back off is achieved at the center frequency of 29 GHz. Output power is larger than 26 dBm for the defined band. A drawback of GaN PAs though is the early onset of nonlinear distortion for lower input powers than for TWTAs. One solution to this problem is to provide external linearisation to reduce distortion.<br /><br />This master thesis project attempts to design a lineariser utilising analog predistortion to cancel the 3rd order intermodulation distortion (IMD) of a K-band GaN PA for a frequency band of 17.5 - 19.5 GHz. The lineariser uses a reflection-based topology with Schottky diodes as nonlinear elements to generate distortion which is fed to the PA. The design process is documented from theory, to simulation, into realisation and finally evaluation of the lineariser.<br /><br />The lineariser is evaluated by its effect on intermodulation ratio (IMR) by means of two-tone measurements. Within this issue of life quality, the acoustic environment is one of the key factors. Concerning sources of environmental noise, road traffic is the dominating one, expected to stay as such during foreseeable future. Therefore, we need tools to predict and experience different sound environments already at the planning stage, focussing foremost on road traffic noise.</p> <p><span lang="EN-GB">In this lecture, the research from Applied Acoustics that concerns outdoor sound is presented. In 2015, 3.47 billion tons of CO2 were emitted in Europe, with industrial facilities and power plants being some of the most intense CO2 emitters, representing approximately 45% of the total amount of total greenhouses gases emissions. CO2 emissions have been correlated to the increase in global temperature, and 2015 was the hottest year since records began in 1880. </span></p> <p><span lang="SV">There is a global effort to suppress climate change by regulating greenhouse gases emissions and reducing fossil fuels use. The 28 Member States of the European Union and Iceland have made an ambitious unilateral commitment to reduce the average annual emissions of greenhouse gases by 20% during the years of 2013-2020. Among the several available strategical tools to reach the previous targets is Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU). CCU technologies may contribute not only to reduce CO2 emissions but also to create value-added products. Combined with industrial symbiosis tools, in which CO2 emitted from one company is utilized as raw material by another company, CCU can be seen as a strategy tool to foster circular economy. Worldwide, there are several examples of CCU symbiosis, as for instance the utilization of waste CO2 to produce methanol or to carbonise ash for the production of building blocks. Additionally, in the last decades, several universities and companies, among others, have conducted research to improve the efficiency of the existing CCU technologies, as well as develop novel technologies. Nevertheless, methods to identify regions with higher potential for the development of CCU partnerships as well as to identify stakeholders that could be involved in CCU partnerships are very limited. In this thesis, two methodologies were developed. The first methodology aims to prioritize regions in Europe with higher potential to implement selected CCU technologies. The second methodology is to be applied at regional level, and aims to provide detailed information on CCU technologies with higher potential for implementation, identify companies that may be involved in CCU partnerships, as well as auxiliary processes that may facilitate the establishment of such partnerships. The second methodology is demonstrated in a case study of Västra Götaland region, Sweden.</span></p> <p><span lang="SV">Results show that </span><span><span lang="SV">the countries with higher emissions were also the ones with greater potential for CCU. </span></span><span lang="SV">The results indicate that Dusseldorf and Cologne (in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany), Antwerp Province and East Flanders (in Vlaams Gewest, Belgium), Cataluña (in Este, Spain) and Śląskie (in Poland) are the six most promising regions in terms of both CO2 availability and potential of CO2 utilization. </span><span lang="SV">At the European Level, concrete curing followed by </span><span><span lang="SV">horticulture production, lignin production</span></span><span lang="SV">, <span>ethylene and propylene polymers were found to be currently the technologies with the highest potential for CCU. </span>Regarding the study performed at Västra Götaland region, nine out of seventeen technologies in total were selected as having potential to be implemented, including horticulture production, mineral carbonation, methanol production, concrete curing, power-to-gas, pH-control, algae production, polymers production and lignin production. The reason why many companies have shown interest in this technology is its unique possibilities in manufacturing products with shapes and functions that were previously impossible. The general knowledge about the technology is relatively low compared and that is what this master’s thesis going to change.</div> <div> </div> <div>In the master’s thesis we have written a designer’s handbook, including how the powder bed fusion AM technology works, how to best use it and what to consider when designing for AM. Even though the technology brings many new opportunities it also has some limitations, especially when using a metallic material. Interconnection and thermal management as two critical parts of 3D IC integration packaging, are facing with harsh challenges due to the miniaturization IC devices. This thesis focus on improving the heat dissipation effect and interconnect performance of 3D IC integration packaging by developing carbon based nanomaterials.<br />Thermal management have been identified by the semiconductor industry as one of the major technological bottlenecks to hinder the further miniaturization of 3D IC devices, particularly in high power devices. The first part of thesis presents a comprehensive thermal management solution including nanocomposite thermal interface material (Nano-TIM), hBN heat spreader and G-CNT hybrid heatsink to address heat issue existing high power IC devices. The Nano-TIM is comprised of a silver-coated nanofiber network and indium matrix. The indium matrix contributed to media of heat conduction, while the nanofiber network defines the geometry and improves the mechanical performance. The thermal and mechanical performance of Nano-TIM is demonstrated in die attach applications in IC packaging. In addition to improve thermal interface resistance by Nano-TIM, an hBN heat spreader was developed through liquid exfoliation method to spread and dilute the heat energy generated in power chip for further cooling effect. This spreader potentially broadened the heat spreader application scenario in IC packaging due to its insulating performance. Moreover, in order to dissipate heat energy from IC microsystem, a 3D carbon based heat sink consisted of CNTs and graphene was synthesized through CVD method. The carbon based heat sink combine 1D CNTs with 2D graphene extended the excellent thermal property to three dimensions through covalent bonding. </p> <div>In the second part of thesis, it is devoted to the development of CNT-based through silicon vias (TSVs) for interconnects in 3D IC packaging. Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VA-CNTs) with different structures were synthesized by the thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. In order to address the incompatibility with IC manufacturing processes and relatively lower electrical conductivity than metal, a series of processes including tape assisted transfer, filling solder balls into hollow structures and electroplating Cu onto CNTs bundles were developed. Accordingly, three different types of CNT-based TSVs were fabricated: densified VA-CNTs TSV, VA-CNT-Solder TSV and VA-CNT- Cu TSV. The electrical conductivity performance of the TSVs was measured using the four probe method. Among these three kinds of TSVs, VA-CNT-Cu TSV exhibits the best conductivity, around the same order of magnitude as copper. Meanwhile, the CTE of this kind of TSV is low, closely matching that of silicon substrate. In addition, to broaden the TSV application scenario, a flexible metal-CNT TSV system was integrated for future wearable microelectronic application. It demonstrated an excellent potential candidate for future flexible electronics applications.</div> <div> In summary, integrating Nano-TIM, heat spreader and micro heatsink together offered a comprehensive thermal management solution for 3D IC microsystem using carbon based materials. Carbon based TSV technology further shortened interconnection and enhanced 3D IC integration. The technology uses electromagnetic fields between a primary and a secondary coil to power the car. In order to initiate the charging process, the car needs to be positioned so the coils are over each other. However, the critical part is to ensure a good positioning though the tolerances are low. To solve this, a good human-machine interface (HMI) is needed to inform the driver how to position the car and to make it as convenient as possible for the driver. This thesis is therefore aimed at developing a HMI for easier positioning of the car when parking for wireless charging.</div> <div><br /></div> <div>The thesis project commenced with a market investigation to get an understanding of the technology and the stakeholders. Thereafter, an identification of user needs was carried out to understand why the alignment is a problem for the user and what is needed in order to help the driver. Concepts were further generated and evaluated until several functions were set to be the basis of the interface.</div> <div><br /></div> <div>The final design for the interface is placed in the DIM where a view of the car from behind is displayed in the middle with a pathway showing how to align the car. When turning the steering wheel, the user can see the exact direction displayed in front of the visualised car and indication of being right or wrong is visualised with colours. Although quite young, remarkable progress has been made in this field over the past decade, especially given the interest in building a quantum computer using superconducting circuits. In this thesis based on the appended papers, we look at generation, engineering and detection of microwave photons using superconducting circuits. We do this by taking advantage of the strong coupling, on-chip tunability and huge nonlinearity available in superconducting circuits. </div> <div>First, we present the strong photon-photon interaction measured experimentally, as shown in the giant cross-Kerr effect. In this work, conditional phase shift of about 20 degrees per photon was measured between two coherent fields at single photon level. Given this strong interaction, we propose and analyze a cascaded setup based on the cross-Kerr effect to detect itinerant microwave photons, a long  outstanding problem with only recent experimental realizations. We show that a nondestructive detection of microwave photons is possible with few cascaded transmons. The on-chip tunability of  Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) is exploited in the experimental work to create a tunable superconducting resonator.  Finally, we show that by placing the  atom at the end of a transmission line, microwave photons can be generated efficiently and on-demand. They have excellent corrosion resistance, wear resistance, high stiffness and high mechanical strength properties. In recent years, EBM technique has been used to manufacture complex design implants with short lead times and minimum post machining. Carbon (max. 0.35 wt.%) and nitrogen (max. 0.25 wt.%) are trace elements which are added to increase mechanical strength, deformability and wear resistance of the alloy. This thesis investigates the microstructural characteristics of the cubes with varying carbon and nitrogen content under as-built and HIP conditions. The industry of scuba diving has advanced significantly since the introduction in mid twentieth century of the first self-contained underwater breathing-apparatus and today offers great technological equipment for people to explore deeper, longer and in environments not consider possible earlier. One of the most important piece of equipment in scuba diving is the dive computer, which main purpose is to monitor, provide information and safeguard the diver during the activity. From once being a simple time keeper and water resistant watch, the dive computer has been revolutionized with the emergence of computer technology. As more and more functions has been added and potential of the device has advanced, the actual product in terms of functionality, design and usability has been somewhat static. While there are many technical and professional applications within scuba diving, the majority of users are within the recreational segment where the main purpose of the activity circles around the experience of exploring the underwater world.</div> <div><br /></div> <div>This project aimed to, through user-centered studies, investigate how users within the scuba diving community interacts with their computers and identify key selling points for Poseidon that can utilize the potential of dive computers and expand their recreational segment. The purpose was to develop a concept based on the foundation of user studies and evaluative feedback that enhances the experience of scuba diving. The culture of scuba diving was also analysed in order to find areas of improvement that could help grow the community and attract new users.</div> <div><br /></div> <div>The methodology and process of the project included a foundational pre-study consisting of market analysis, user studies, interviews, benchmarking, personas and which concluded in a more defined problem definition and identified needs. This was an important part of the project that helped guide the direction towards a function analysis and what features of a dive computer that are essential and in order to provide a necessary balance between safety and freedom.</div> <div><br /></div> <div>The results of the project was a dive computer concept with a radically new design in terms of usability and functionality, focusing on intuitive use and that limits the number of functions to only the most essential. Ur ett omställningsperspektiv är tre årtionden inte lång tid. FN:s hållbarhetsmål är satta redan till 2030 och klimatförändringarna kräver en snabb förändring av stora sociotekniska system. Utmaningarna är enorma. Förmågan att nå de ambitiösa samhällsmålen vilar på gemensamma ansträngningar, men också på att privata och offentliga aktörer vågar gå först i omställningen.</p><div>​IST 2017 – den åttonde internationella konferensen om hållbarhetsomställningar – kommer särskilt att uppmärksamma de utmaningar som möter dem som vill agera och göra mer. The Bonus SHEBA project addresses a wide range of environmental impacts of</div> <div>shipping in the Baltic Sea including air pollution, marine pollution, underwater noise and climate</div> <div>change as well as the socio-economic consequences of these impacts.
