Experimental testing of large-scale structures is the most reliable means to assess and improve the resilience and performance of structural systems under extreme loads. The development and use of advanced cyber-physical systems, has paved the way to enhance the existing experimental methods in a suitable and cost-effective manner. Hybrid simulation is an innovative cyber-physical testing technique in which computational models and physical components are integrated at run-time. This method overcomes many of the limitations of conventional shaking table tests while using similar equipment used for quasi-static testing. A state-of-the-art hybrid testing facility, referred to as the Multi-Axis Substructure Testing (MAST) system, has been designed, assembled and validated that is capable of simulating the complex three-dimensional time-varying boundary effects on large-scale structural components. The MAST system is unique in Australasia and is capable to serve the research community and practice, nationally and internationally. The paper presents versatile capabilities of the MAST system that will greatly advance the current state of knowledge in large-scale experimental testing.</span></p> <p></p>http://www.chalmers.se/sv/om-chalmers/kalendarium/Sidor/General-Physics-Colloquium-med-Serena-Dalena.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/om-chalmers/kalendarium/Sidor/General-Physics-Colloquium-med-Serena-Dalena.aspxGeneral Physics Colloquium med Serena Dalena<p>PJ Lecture Hall, Chalmers</p><p>Serena Dalena, Associate Editor, Physical Review Letters</p>Title: Successful Letters in Physical Review Letters: An Editor’s perspective<br /><br />Date and time: 30 March, 13.15<br />Location: PJ Lecture Hall, Chalmershttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/mc2/kalendarium/Sidor/Assistant-Professor-Tomas-Löfwander.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/mc2/kalendarium/Sidor/Assistant-Professor-Tomas-L%C3%B6fwander.aspxInstallationsföreläsning Biträdande Professor i Teoretisk fysik Tomas Löfwander<p></p><p>Titel: Electronic transport in graphene</p><div style="text-align:justify"><img width="203" height="237" class="chalmersPosition-FloatRight" src="/en/departments/mc2/calendar/Documents/tomas%20löfwander.jpg" alt="" style="height:252px;width:189px;margin:5px" /></div> <div style="text-align:justify"><strong>Abstrakt: </strong></div> <div style="text-align:left"><div>This presentation will provide an overview of our recent research into electronic transport in graphene. Over the past four decades, FRPs have been increasingly used for strengthening and repair of bridge structures, and more recently, in the manufacture of whole/hybrid FRP bridges. Although, the short-term behaviour of FRP/steel bonded joints has been extensively studied, the subject of the long-term performance and durability has not been researched to the same degree. Today, uncertainties regarding the durability aspects of adhesively bonded FRP/steel joints present a major obstacle to their growing application. This thesis aims to deepen the understanding of the structural effects of environmental exposure conditions relevant to bridges on bonded FRP/steel joints, with a focus on predicting the mechanical response of aged joints. </span></p> <p><span>Firstly, to map out the research needs, a comprehensive state-of-the-art literature review was carried out, and the most important identified knowledge-gaps were pursued for research. An extensive experimental programme was conducted including long-term testing of bonded FRP/steel joints that were subjected to various temperature ranges, humidity levels, and cyclic exposure scenarios. Among other factors, the effects of adhesive layer thickness and type of FRP material were investigated. The results showed the importance of FRP permeability on moisture and damage distribution profile in bonded joints. In addition, freeze–thaw cycles</span><span> </span><span>were found to have no unfavourable effects on the strength of dry or preconditioned joints. Complementary material characterization tests were also conducted to study moisture diffusion kinetics. These results underlined the importance of considering the exposure history for prediction and design purposes. Furthermore, the dependency of cohesive laws of the adhesive material on environmental exposure was investigated using an innovative approach based on open-face specimens in conjunction with the J-integral analysis.</span></p> <p><span>FE simulations were incorporated to predict the mechanical response of joints after environmental ageing. Firstly, the applicability of the cohesive zone modelling approach to strength prediction of bonded FRP/steel joints was investigated.</span><span> </span><span>The results confirmed the accuracy of the predictions provided that the variation of failure modes were taken into account. Moreover, the minimum required overlap length was found to be directly proportional to the shape of cohesive laws. This finding, in combination with the environmental-dependent cohesive laws, can be employed in the design phase to ensure sufficient anchorage length after in-service exposure. Lastly, sequentially coupled moisture diffusion–fracture analysis were found to provide reasonable predictions of the mechanical behaviour of environmentally aged joints. This study provides the basis for durability-related experimental characterisation methods and predictive modelling of adhesively bonded FRP/steel joints. </span></p> <p><span> </span></p> <h6 class="chalmersElement-H6"><span>Keywords:</span><span> fibre reinforced polymer, durability, long-term performance, adhesively bonded joints, FRP/steel joints, moisture diffusion, cohesive zone modelling</span></h6> http://www.chalmers.se/sv/styrkeomraden/ikt/kalendarium/Sidor/ICSA-2017.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/styrkeomraden/ikt/kalendarium/Sidor/ICSA-2017.aspxIEEE International Conference on Software Architecture (ICSA 2017)<p>Lindholmen Science Park</p><p>April 3-7 | Gothenburg, Sweden</p> <br /><a href="http://icsa-conferences.org/2017/" target="_blank"><img src="/SiteCollectionImages/Areas%20of%20Advance/Information%20and%20Communication%20Technology/News%20events/Calendar/ICSA-2017_logo-260x300.jpeg" class="chalmersPosition-FloatRight" alt="" style="margin:5px" /></a>ICSA is the premier venue for practitioners and researchers interested in software architecture, in component-based software engineering and in quality aspects of software and how these relate to the design of software architectures. One of those, is the inclusion of acoustic quality in urban environments, before, during, or after a planning process. To address this for a yet to be built area, metrics are needed that try to quantify acoustic quality. Currently, due to limited models of auditory perception, it is essential that sound samples for the said environments are produced, in order to be used either for further perception based research, or to provide audio examples that can be judged on a case by case basis. The products from this procedure, auralisations, are usually realised with physically valid models, which simulate physical processes to create realistic sounds. While there are several methods aiming for this, fast and computationally expensive simulations of extended in area urban environments, is still a challenge. <br /><br />This report suggests a method for auralising background traffic noise, produced by cars travelling on roads distant from a listener, usually obscured by buildings or other barriers. To achieve computationally efficient auralisation of these scenarios, some parts of the technique are modelled using simulations of physical processes, while others are more simplified methods. For the former, ground reflection and air turbulence are modelled in detail. Individual pass-by events and the Doppler effect, are not modelled explicitly for each vehicle, but instead an approach that considers the traffic as cumulated noise is used. Based on the long distance limitation, shifts in the frequency domain, combined with modulation transfer functions and controlled coherence between the two channels of a listener, attempt to simulate the Doppler effect, fluctuations due to traffic flow inhomogeneities, and the spatial audio image. The modelling of the source output power of the vehicles, uses recorded data as a basis. For validation, auralisations are tested against mixed output from a previously developed and validated demonstrator.<br /></p> </div> </div> <div> <div> <h6 class="chalmersElement-H6">Nyckelord: background traffic noise synthesis, auralisation, urban sound planning<span></span></h6> </div> </div></span><br />http://www.chalmers.se/sv/centrum/sportteknologi/kalendarium/Sidor/Seminarium-uthallighetstraning.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/centrum/sportteknologi/kalendarium/Sidor/Seminarium-uthallighetstraning.aspxSeminarium om uthållighetsträning, med fokus på längdskidåkning<p>HB4, Hörsalsvägen</p><p>Vi gästas av Sverker Sörlin, bl a författare till boken &quot;Kroppens geni - Marit, Petter och skidåkningen som lidelse&quot;, samt Daniel Svensson, som forskat kring hur träningen utvecklats, framför allt inom längdskidåkning.</p><p class="chalmersElement-P"><span><a href="https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sverker_S%C3%B6rlin">Sverker Sörlin</a><span style="display:inline-block"></span></span> är idéhistoriker och professor i Miljöhistoria på KTH. It includes a contact model with contact springs that accounts for the effect of local small-scale tread deformation. Results showed that simulated noise was sensitive to the value of the spring stiffness, primarily as it affected the total contact force. A non-linear contact spring formulation resulted in a reduction of the high-frequency content in the contact forces and simulated noise.<br /><br />Aspects of small-scale tread dynamics were evaluated by simulating the detailed contact between an elastic layer and a rough road surface using a numerical time domain contact model including non-linear contact springs to account for small-scale roughness. Contact stiffness increased as the number of contact points grew as well as the deformation of their non-linear contact springs. The results imply that dynamic properties of the local tread deformation may be of importance when simulating contact details during normal tyre/road interaction conditions, but that effects of damping could, as a first approximation, be included as an increased stiffness in a quasi-static tread model.<br /><br />The speed dependency of measured and simulated tyre/road noise was analysed. A large part of the noise had a high speed exponent, traditionally connected with air-pumping. However, the results showed that tyre vibrations can generate noise with a speed exponent that verges on what is expected from air-pumping. Due to the overlap in the speed exponents of the main generation mechanisms, they cannot be distinguished through a speed exponent analysis.<br /><br />The most important contribution of this work is an increased understanding of how the contact spring formulation affects the simulated noise. The work has also provided insights into the speed dependency of tyre/road noise generation mechanisms.</p> <div> </div></div> </div> <div> <div class="item"> <h6 class="chalmersElement-H6">Nyckelord: Tyre/road contact modelling, Air-pumping, Tyre/road contact stiffness,Tyre/road noise, Speed exponent analysis</h6> </div> </div> <p></p>http://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/s2/kalendarium/Sidor/Oleksandr-Semeniuta,-Signals-and-Systems.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/s2/kalendarium/Sidor/Oleksandr-Semeniuta,-Signals-and-Systems.aspxOleksandr Semeniuta, Signals and Systems<p>Room EC, Hörsalsvägen 11</p><p>Control of visually guided event-based behaviors in industrial robotic systems</p><p>Oleksandr Semeniuta är doktorand på avdelningen System-och reglerteknik</p> <p>Diskussionsledare är Dr. Mikael Ekström, Mälardalens universitet</p> <p>Huvudhandledare är docent Petter Falkman</p>http://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/rss/kalendarium/Sidor/Erik-Blomberg,-Rymd--och-geovetenskap.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/rss/kalendarium/Sidor/Erik-Blomberg,-Rymd--och-geovetenskap.aspxErik Blomberg, Rymd- och geovetenskap<p>EA</p><p>Titel : Biomass Retrieval in Topographic Boreal Forest using Polarimetric and Tomographic SAR in P- and L-band</p><p><span><span><span style="display:inline-block"><span></span></span></span><span style="display:inline-block"></span>Erik Blomberg är doktorand i forskargruppen radarfjärranalys vid institutionen för rymd- och geovetenskap.<span style="display:inline-block"></span></span></p>http://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/ee/kalendarium/Sidor/Angelica-Corcoran,-Energi-och-Miljö.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/ee/kalendarium/Sidor/Angelica-Corcoran,-Energi-och-Milj%C3%B6.aspxAngelica Corcoran, Energi och Miljö<p>HC2</p><p>&quot;Investigation on ilmenite used for Oxygen Carrying Aided Combustion</p><div>Angelica Corcoran presenterar sin licentiatavhandling:<span style="background-color:initial"></span><span style="background-color:initial">&quot;</span><span style="background-color:initial">Investigation on ilmenite used for Oxygen Carrying Aided Combustion</span><span style="background-color:initial">&quot;</span><span style="background-color:initial">. Forskarskola: Fundamental Physics</p><h2 class="chalmersElement-H2">Sammanfattning av avhandlingen<span></span></h2> <span><p>The scientific method implies a dynamical relationship between experiment and theory. Indeed, experimental results are understood through theories, which themselves are of less value until confronted with experiment. In this thesis I study this relationship by quantifying two key properties of theories: theoretical uncertainties and predictive power.</p> <div> </div> <p>Specifically I investigate chiral effective field theory and the precision and accuracy by which it reproduces and predicts low-energy nuclear observables. I estimate both statistical and systematic uncertainties. The conclusion is that the latter, which in my approximation originates from omitted higher-order terms in the chiral expansion, are much larger than the former. In relation to this, I investigate the order-by-order convergence up to fourth order in the chiral expansion. I find that predictions generally improve with increasing order, while the additional low-energy constants (LECs) of the interaction makes it more difficult to fully constrain the theory. Furthermore, in order to accurately reproduce properties of heavier nuclei I see indications that it is necessary to include selected experimental data from such systems directly in the fitting of the interaction.</p> <div> </div> <p>In order to perform these studies I have developed accurate and efficient methods as well as computer codes for the calculation of observables. In particular, the application of automatic differentiation for derivative calculations is shown to be crucial for the minimization procedure. These developments open up new avenues for future studies. For example, it is now possible to do extensive sensitivity analyses of the experimental data and the model; to investigate the power counting from a data perspective; and incorporate more experimental data in the fitting procedure.</p></span>http://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/math/kalendarium/Sidor/Licentiatseminarium170420.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/math/kalendarium/Sidor/Licentiatseminarium170420.aspxLicentiatseminarium i matematisk statistik: Jonatan Kallus<p>Pascal, Hörsalsvägen 1</p><p>Resampling in network modeling of high-dimensional genomic data</p><br />Diskussionsinledare är professor Erik Sonnhammer, Stockholms universitethttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/arch/kalendarium/Sidor/TRADERS-Open-School.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/arch/kalendarium/Sidor/TRADERS-Open-School.aspxTRADERS Open School - the city could be otherwise<p>Z33 Hasselt (BE)</p><p>TRADERS Open School is a 10-day academy that brings together art and design thinkers, practitioners and various publics to critically engage in urban processes and discourses through the lenses of agency, participation and public space. The event is premised on the notion that ‘things can be otherwise’, it acts as a challenge to rethink and conceptualise potential urban futures by way of art and design. To do this, the Open School is structured as an academy, a place for learning. Accepting that knowledge is not only held in the head but being actively constructed in situ and practice, we see the academy as moving from a celebration of genius to a focus on the creation of what Brian Eno termed ‘scenius’, the intelligence that comes from a collective ecology of thinkers.</p><em><img src="/SiteCollectionImages/Institutioner/arch/kalendarium/2017/TRADERS_OS_POSTERA3_340.jpg" class="chalmersPosition-FloatRight" alt="" style="margin:5px" />The city could be otherwise</em> is both a statement and question wrapped in one.  As a statement it prompts alternatives that challenge the hegemonies, or mental blockages, that have led to accepting situations of gross economic inequality, ecological degradation and social crises.  As a question, it queries our agency as citizens: to what extent can we give shape to the ‘otherwise’—are we passive observers or active agents for change?  For designers and artists, it prompts a reflection on the state of socially engaged theory and practice in urban contexts. <br /><br />The Open School aims at a creative re-thinking of the city, trading practices and ideas, peers-pushing-peers in a place of learning and experimentation through dialogue and action.  Participants will be encouraged to take different roles and stances, questioning<em> if</em> and <em>how</em> the city can be otherwise. <br /><br />The structure of the 10 days intertwines practice and theory, established thinkers and students, emergent practices and traditional methods, in what we consider an experiential and cognitive generative dance. This dance is a key metaphor for the academy’s organisation, which creates an environment and structure for ideas and practices to come together in dialogue without an overly curated programme, instead ‘thinking on our feet’.<br /><br /><a href="http://tr-aders.eu/open-school/">The full programme will be online soon: keep a close look on our website </a><br /><br /><a href="https://www.facebook.com/TRADERS.EU/">Facebook</a><br /><br />http://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/cee/kalendarium/Sidor/Viktor-Bergion,-Geologi-och-geoteknik,-BoM.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/cee/kalendarium/Sidor/Viktor-Bergion,-Geologi-och-geoteknik,-BoM.aspxViktor Bergion, Geologi och geoteknik, BoM<p>Sal SB-H3, Sven Hultins gata 6</p><p>Development of a risk-based decision model for prioritizing microbial risk mitigation measures in drinking water systems</p><span><span><br />Huvudhandledare: Prof Lars Rosén<br />Biträdande handledare: Tekn Dr Andreas Lindhe och Tekn Dr Ekaterina Sokolova.  <br />Diskussionsinledare: Docent Jacob Ottoson, Livsmedelverket.<span></span></span><span lang="SV"><span style="display:inline-block"></span></span></span><br /><style>  p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {margin-top:0cm;margin-right:0cm;margin-bottom:8.0pt;margin-left:0cm;line-height:107%;font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Calibri;} .MsoChpDefault {font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Calibri;} .MsoPapDefault {margin-bottom:8.0pt;line-height:107%;} @page WordSection1 {size:612.0pt 792.0pt;margin:70.85pt 70.85pt 70.85pt 70.85pt;} div. The most common cause of deterioration of concrete structures is corrosion of the reinforcement; a problem that is expected to become more severe in future, due to climate change. Nevertheless, the demands for load-bearing capacity often increase with time. Advances in engineering methods are needed for reliable structural assessment of existing structures. Such methods should be calibrated with experiments and advanced analyses and complemented with approprate safety formats. This will allow us to meet future needs in an environmentally friendly and economic way and avoid unnecessary re-constructions.<br /><br />The influence of load history on reliability level was compared for the safety formats provided in fib Model Code 2010. A statically indeterminate structure subject to vertical as well as horizontal loading was analysed. Not all safety formats reached the intended safety levels for all load histories. This illustrates how important it is to consider the load history when making structural assessments.<br /><br />One stage in developing an engineering model for bond of corroded reinforcement was to investigate the possibility of using thin-section models to represent bond behaviour in beam anchorage zones. Thin-section models were compared to larger, finite element models as well as experimental results. The results showed that the thin-section models may be able to capture the bond capacity, although the results were strongly influenced by the boundary conditions applied to the thin-section model.<br /><br />An existing one-dimensional model was further developed showing the bond capacity of corroded reinforcement bars in concrete. This new model was based on the local bond stress-slip relationship in fib Model Code 2010 and was calibrated against a large database of bond test results. During the verification, the model showed results which were slightly on the safe side. There was also good agreement with an empirical expression for bond capacity found in the literature.<br /><br />The contributions made by this work provide engineers with a simple, verified model of the bond capacity of corroded reinforcement in concrete. They also facilitate the development of a more holistic and reliable assessment method. The knowledge gained about the influence of load history and boundary conditions will be utilised in further development of the one-dimensional bond model, as it will be expanded to cover more reinforcement layouts and complemented with an appropriate safety format.</p> </div> </div> <div> <div> <p></p> <h6 class="chalmersElement-H6"> Nyckelord: finite element modelling, safety formats.,bond, reliability, anchorage, reinforced concrete structures</h6> <p></p> </div> <br /></div> <p></p>http://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/s2/kalendarium/Sidor/Edith-Condo-Neira,-Signals-and-Systems.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/s2/kalendarium/Sidor/Edith-Condo-Neira,-Signals-and-Systems.aspxEdith Condo Neira, Signals and Systems<p>Room EA, Hörsalsvägen 11</p><p> Antenna Evaluation for Vehicular Applications in Multipath Environment</p><p>Edith Condo Neira är doktorand på avdelningen Kommunikationssystem</p> <p>Diskussionsledare är Dr. Claes Beckman, KTH, Kungliga tekniska högskolan, Stockholm</p> <p>Huvudhandledare är professor Erik Ström</p>http://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/math/kalendarium/Sidor/Disputation170428.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/math/kalendarium/Sidor/Disputation170428.aspxDisputation i matematik: Anders Martinsson<p>Pascal, Hörsalsvägen 1</p><p>Topics in discrete random structures</p><br />Fakultetsopponent är professor Alexander Holroyd, Microsoft Research, Redmondhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/om-chalmers/kalendarium/Sidor/Doktorspromotion-2017.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/om-chalmers/kalendarium/Sidor/Doktorspromotion-2017.aspxDoktorspromotion 2017<p></p><p>Doktorspromotionen 2017 äger rum 6 maj i Konserthuset. In this thesis, I present new nanomaterials which, in my opinion, possibly will contribute to the solution of two rather important problems faced by modern society, i.e. high energy consumption and costs for medical care due to ageing population.<br />In connection with the first problem, the effectiveness of energy storage devices such as supercapacitors, to a big extent, depends on carbon nanomaterials used for accumulation of electrostatic charges. At the moment, the production of carbon materials mostly relies on unsustainable fossil fuels as precursors. I describe the fabrication of freestanding functional carbon nanofibrous (CNF) materials derived from cellulose, the most abundant renewable resource, via consecutive steps of cellulose acetate electrospinning, subsequent deacetylation to cellulose, and carbonization. I report the technologically simple and environmentally friendly method of CNF synthesis from cellulose that improves carbon yield from 13% to 20% and significantly reduces the regeneration step. The obtained CNF sheets are mechanically stable, have hydrophobic surface and consist of nitrogen-doped randomly oriented nanofibrous network.<br />Moreover, I demonstrate the prospect of effective using of several modified types of CNF-based materials as electrodes in supercapacitors. Incorporation of highly conductive carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs, MWCNTs and cvd CNTs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) into CNF frameworks improves electrical conductivity and increases the surface area of the produced composite materials, which leads to high specific capacitance values (up to 241 F/g), cyclic stability, and power density of these materials. Despite their slightly lower specific surface area in comparison with pristine CNFs, nitrogen-doped CNF materials (4-5.6 at.% of nitrogen) had about 2.5 times higher specific capacitance due the positive effect of pseudocapacitance. These results suggest that cellulose is a suitable precursor for the synthesis of sustainable and efficient carbonaceous electrodes for supercapacitors. Functionalization methods used in this study proved to be helpful in enhancing the electrochemical performance of carbonized cellulose materials.<br />In connection with the second problem, biocompatible and electrically conductive nanostructures are viewed as very prospective scaffolds in tissue engineering (TE) field. TE approach can help to cure neurodegenerative diseases of elderly population via development of healthy replacement neural tissues or in vitro models for drug testing. Cellulose-derived biomaterials are assessed as scaffolds for the growth of neural tissue. These scaffold materials are characterized with excellent biocompatibility, nanosized topography and electrical conductivity to support adhesion, growth and differentiation of SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. Possibility of using inks from nanofibrillated cellulose for 3D printing allows even more effective assembly of designed conductive patterns for cell guidance. The results show prolific cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation of neural cells along the guidelines.<br />In overall, the positive implementation of the cellulose-derived nanofibrous materials in the above mentioned applications suggest that the synthesis of sustainable and efficient materials based on renewable resources is a very prospective approach. Such materials should play a major role in our future effort to satisfy the increasing demand on functional high-tech products.</p> <div><br />Keywords: cellulose, nanofibrillated cellulose, electrospinning, carbon nanofibers, carbon composites, 3D printing, energy storage, neural tissue engineering<br /></div> <p> </p> <p>Plats: MC2, Kemivägen 9, Kollektorn</p>http://www.chalmers.se/sv/om-chalmers/kalendarium/Sidor/General-Physics-Colloquium-med-Roberto-Contino.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/om-chalmers/kalendarium/Sidor/General-Physics-Colloquium-med-Roberto-Contino.aspxGeneral Physics Colloquium med Roberto Contino<p>PJ Lecture Hall, Chalmers</p><p>Roberto Contino, Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, Italy</p>Title: Higgs precision physics as a probe of new dynamics<br /><br />Date and time: 1 June, 13.15<br />Location: PJ Lecture Hall, Chalmershttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/mc2/kalendarium/Sidor/Thesis-defence-by-Shuangxi-Sun.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/mc2/kalendarium/Sidor/Thesis-defence-by-Shuangxi-Sun.aspxDisputation Shuangxi Sun<p></p><p>Titel: Carbon Based Materials synthesis and characterization for 3D Integrated Electronics</p><p></p> <p>Abstrakt: <br />3D IC integration packaging technology extends Moore’s law and shifts the IC field into a new generation of smaller, but more powerful devices. Interconnection and thermal management as two critical parts of 3D IC integration packaging, are facing with harsh challenges due to the miniaturization IC devices. This thesis focus on improving the heat dissipation effect and interconnect performance of 3D IC integration packaging by developing carbon based nanomaterials.<br />Thermal management have been identified by the semiconductor industry as one of the major technological bottlenecks to hinder the further miniaturization of 3D IC devices, particularly in high power devices. The first part of thesis presents a comprehensive thermal management solution including nanocomposite thermal interface material (Nano-TIM), hBN heat spreader and G-CNT hybrid heatsink to address heat issue existing high power IC devices. The Nano-TIM is comprised of a silver-coated nanofiber network and indium matrix. The indium matrix contributed to media of heat conduction, while the nanofiber network defines the geometry and improves the mechanical performance. The thermal and mechanical performance of Nano-TIM is demonstrated in die attach applications in IC packaging. In addition to improve thermal interface resistance by Nano-TIM, an hBN heat spreader was developed through liquid exfoliation method to spread and dilute the heat energy generated in power chip for further cooling effect. This spreader potentially broadened the heat spreader application scenario in IC packaging due to its insulating performance. Moreover, in order to dissipate heat energy from IC microsystem, a 3D carbon based heat sink consisted of CNTs and graphene was synthesized through CVD method. The carbon based heat sink combine 1D CNTs with 2D graphene extended the excellent thermal property to three dimensions through covalent bonding. </p> <div>In the second part of thesis, it is devoted to the development of CNT-based through silicon vias (TSVs) for interconnects in 3D IC packaging. Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VA-CNTs) with different structures were synthesized by the thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. In order to address the incompatibility with IC manufacturing processes and relatively lower electrical conductivity than metal, a series of processes including tape assisted transfer, filling solder balls into hollow structures and electroplating Cu onto CNTs bundles were developed. Accordingly, three different types of CNT-based TSVs were fabricated: densified VA-CNTs TSV, VA-CNT-Solder TSV and VA-CNT- Cu TSV. The electrical conductivity performance of the TSVs was measured using the four probe method. Among these three kinds of TSVs, VA-CNT-Cu TSV exhibits the best conductivity, around the same order of magnitude as copper. Meanwhile, the CTE of this kind of TSV is low, closely matching that of silicon substrate. In addition, to broaden the TSV application scenario, a flexible metal-CNT TSV system was integrated for future wearable microelectronic application. It demonstrated an excellent potential candidate for future flexible electronics applications.</div> <div> In summary, integrating Nano-TIM, heat spreader and micro heatsink together offered a comprehensive thermal management solution for 3D IC microsystem using carbon based materials. Carbon based TSV technology further shortened interconnection and enhanced 3D IC integration. To some extent, these findings offer a potential solution for the further miniaturization of 3D IC microsystem.</div> <div>Keywords: TIM, VA-CNTs, VA-CNT-Cu, VA-CNT-Solder, TSV, G-CNT, 3D IC integration, thermal resistance, electrical resistivity, graphene.<br /></div> <p> </p> <p><strong>Plats: MC2, Kemivägen 9, Kollektorn</strong></p>http://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/mc2/kalendarium/Sidor/Thesis-defence-by-Sankar-Raman-Sathyamoorthy.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/mc2/kalendarium/Sidor/Thesis-defence-by-Sankar-Raman-Sathyamoorthy.aspxDisputation Sankar Raman Sathyamoorthy<p></p><p>Titel: Quantum optics in superconducting circuits:  Generating, engineering and detecting microwave photons</p><div><strong>Abstrakt:</strong></div> <div>Quantum optics in superconducting circuits, known as circuit QED, studies the interaction of photons at microwave frequencies with artificial atoms made of Josephson junctions. Although quite young, remarkable progress has been made in this field over the past decade, especially given the interest in building a quantum computer using superconducting circuits. In this thesis based on the appended papers, we look at generation, engineering and detection of microwave photons using superconducting circuits. We do this by taking advantage of the strong coupling, on-chip tunability and huge nonlinearity available in superconducting circuits. </div> <div>First, we present the strong photon-photon interaction measured experimentally, as shown in the giant cross-Kerr effect. In this work, conditional phase shift of about 20 degrees per photon was measured between two coherent fields at single photon level. Given this strong interaction, we propose and analyze a cascaded setup based on the cross-Kerr effect to detect itinerant microwave photons, a long  outstanding problem with only recent experimental realizations. We show that a nondestructive detection of microwave photons is possible with few cascaded transmons. The on-chip tunability of  Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) is exploited in the experimental work to create a tunable superconducting resonator.  Finally, we show that by placing the  atom at the end of a transmission line, microwave photons can be generated efficiently and on-demand. Such a setup can in principle  generate any superposition of 0 and 1 photons (photonic qubits) in arbitrary wave packets.</div> <div> </div> <div><div><strong>Plats:</strong> MC2, Kemivägen 9, Kollektorn</div> <br /></div>http://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/arch/kalendarium/Sidor/Embrace-the-Water.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/arch/kalendarium/Sidor/Embrace-the-Water.aspxEmbrace the Water 2017<p>Gothenburg</p><p>A Cities of the Future Conference that will take place in Gothenburg 12-14 June 2017: The conference aims at gathering urban planners and water professionals from around the globe in order to share experiences and projects on the opportunities and threats of water in modern, sustainable and innovative cities. The conference is jointly organised by the Bonus project SHEBA and by the International Surface Ocean - Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS).</p><div>Given its importance for the transport of goods on a global scale, there is a growing interest on the</div> <div>sustainability of the shipping industry. It has long been recognised that shipping is a very carbonefficient</div> <div>transport medium, BUT there is an increasing focus on its broader environmental</div> <div>consequences. The Bonus SHEBA project addresses a wide range of environmental impacts of</div> <div>shipping in the Baltic Sea including air pollution, marine pollution, underwater noise and climate</div> <div>change as well as the socio-economic consequences of these impacts. SOLAS is an international</div> <div>project contributing to Future Earth with the mission statement ”linking ocean-atmosphere</div> <div>interactions with climate and people”. In conjunction with SHEBA’s final meeting and the SOLAS</div> <div>workshop on Ship Plumes the projects jointly organize a conference and invite the scientific</div> <div>community and stakeholders of the maritime sector to two days of presentations of the latest</div> <div>scientific findings, discussions and poster presentations on the topics.</div> <div> </div> <h3 class="chalmersElement-H3">Topics addressed</h3> <ul><li>Impacts of shipping on air pollution and climate change including impacts on human health and land ecosystems</li> <li>Impacts of shipping on marine pollution and marine ecosystems</li> <li>Impact of shipping on noise pollution - underwater noise and its impacts on marine biota, above-water noise and its impacts on human well-being</li> <li>Environment and society - socio-economic valuation of the impacts of shipping, impacts of shipping on ecosystem services, shipping and marine spatial planning</li></ul> <div> </div> <div><div> </div> <h3 class="chalmersElement-H3">Who should attend</h3></div> <div>Scientific community; researchers and students from atmospheric, marine and climate research, environmental economics, political and social science</div> <ul><li>Environmental and transport agencies</li> <li>Environmental managers from governmental, regional and local organisations</li> <li>Maritime transport sector</li></ul> <div><div> </div> <h3 class="chalmersElement-H3">Interested?</h3></div> <div>To obtain in the next month further information about the conference, <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdU6Iz2GEKvmiT3AvctsZGuvTf4nfnLBkrXjPMjE8yk-IWjTw/viewform">please, register here</a><br /><br /></div> <h3 class="chalmersElement-H3">Organising committee</h3> <div>Jana Moldanova (IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Bonus SHEBA)</div> <div>David Turner (University of Gothenburg, SOLAS)</div> <div>Tom Bell (Plymouth Marine Laboratory, SOLAS)</div> <div>Lena Granhag (Chalmers University of Technology, Bonus SHEBA)</div> <div>Ingrid Mawdsley (IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Bonus SHEBA)</div> <div>Markus Quante (Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Institute of Coastal Research, Bonus SHEBA)</div> <div>Anna Rutgersson (Uppsala University, SOLAS)</div>http://www.chalmers.se/sv/styrkeomraden/ikt/kalendarium/Sidor/ACM-VRST-2017.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/styrkeomraden/ikt/kalendarium/Sidor/ACM-VRST-2017.aspxThe ACM Symposium on Virtual Reality Software and Technology (VRST) 2017<p>Chalmers Gothenburg (location to be decided)</p><p>VRST will provide an opportunity for VR researchers to interact, share new results, show live demonstrations of their work, and discuss emerging directions for the field.</p> <span class="text-normal page-content"><br />The ACM Symposium on Virtual Reality Software and Technology (VRST) is an international forum for the exchange of experience and knowledge among researchers and developers concerned with virtual reality software and technology. <br /><br /><a target="_blank" href="http://vrst.acm.org/">To conference website: http://vrst.acm.org/</a><br /></span>http://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/arch/kalendarium/Sidor/Making-space-for-hope.aspxhttp://www.chalmers.se/sv/institutioner/arch/kalendarium/Sidor/Making-space-for-hope.aspxMaking space for hope<p>Chalmers tekniska högskola, Göteborg</p><p>Department of Conservation, University of Gothenburg and Department of Architecture, Chalmers, together with Department of Architecture, KTH and Department of Spatial planning, Blekinge Institute of Technology, are pleased to invite you to Gothenburg, Sweden for the AESOP Annual Congress in 2018. This event will offer the opportunity for scholars from Europe, as well as from around the world, to contribute to the exchange of experiences, ideas and knowledge regarding planning in the 21st cent! ury, in particular in relation to the congress theme: MAKING SPACE FOR HOPE.</p><div>Planning is one of the activities – on different levels and in different contexts – striving for better futures. We live in dark times – climate crisis, economic regression, war and conflicts of political, ethnical and religious reasons. What used to be unrecognized by traditional planning debates can be useful to respond to contemporary planning problems. In-between spaces, insurgencies and untold stories can be rethought and re-explored to energize planning debates and practice. The challenges should be considered as triggers for transformations to a sustainable future. Planning should contribute to MAKING SPACE FOR HOPE.</div> <div> </div> <h2 class="chalmersElement-H2">Scientific and social programme</h2> <div>• Invited keynote speakers</div> <div>• Approximately 20 paper tracks</div> <div>• Round table sessions</div> <div>• Poster presentations</div> <div>• Thematic group meetings</div> <div>• Mobile workshops</div> <div>• Congress dinner</div> <div>• Artistic interventions</div> <div>• …and more</div> <div> </div> <h2 class="chalmersElement-H2">Important dates</h2> <div>• Call for abstract: October 2017</div> <div>• Abstract submission deadline: January 15, 2018</div> <div>• Notification abstracts: February 28, 2018</div> <div>• Early bird registration deadline: April 30, 2018</div> <div>• Full paper/extended abstract submission deadline: May 15, 2018 </div> <div>• PhD Workshop in Karlskrona: July 5-8, 2018</div> <div>• AESOP 2018 Congress in Gothenburg: July 10-14, 2018</div> <div>• Post Congress Tour, Stockholm metropolitan region: July 16-18, 2018 </div> <div> </div> <h2 class="chalmersElement-H2">Pre-congress PhD workshop</h2> <div>The PhD workshop will be held on July 5-8, 2018 on an island in the archipelago outside Karlskrona, Sweden.
