High temperature corrosion and ash research, part 2
Industrial fuel conversion is moving more and more into waste fuels containing catalytically active, corrosive, harmful and valuable components. The chemical environment created, and the ash
species formed are of increasing complexity and affect conversion efficiencies, corrosion attack and recycling potentials. The activity connects competence areas of thermal conversion, ash chemistry,
material and recycling with a focus to identify synergies between energy conversion and recycling processes. Some more specific activities are:
Studies of chemical interactions between minerals used as bed material in fluidized bed combustors and fuel ash compounds/gases. The bed material-fuel ash interactions result in new compounds that
may have an impact on the utilization/landfill options for the used bed materials. This is an important area since the range of fuels used in heat and power production is increasing and new bed materials
are introduced. Mapping of the influence of fuel composition on the chemistry of the ash flows from combustion units. There is an optimization potential there which is not used today. This task is planned to be carried out in cooperation with industrial contacts such as Renova AB and Babcock & Wilcox Vølund AB. Studies of utilization options for used bed materials/bottom ashes from combustion units.
Strengthening of the collaboration between the Energy Technology group and the division Energy and Materials at the Dept. of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering through existing common projects and applications for new collaboration projects. The work in this area will be conducted by Pavleta Knutsson and Burcak Ebin.
